Thanks Fabienne Flessel of Global Voices!

Here's the beauty of Global Voices for you: when I was hired as Global Voices' first Francophonia Editor, I covered Guadeloupe and Martinique among other French speaking countries. The President gets elected by popular vote and then gets to nominate a Prime Minister which serves as head of government. The would-be Prime Minister must then get ratified by Parliament.

Last June, President Rene Préval nominated a woman, Michèle Pierre-Louis, for the job of Prime Minister. Michèle Pierre-Louis is well liked of many sectors in the country and widely appreciated for her track record as a founder of and current Executive Director of FOKAL, a non-profit funded partly by the Soros foundation. Many women's organizations and others tired of Haitian-style male-dominated politics as usual think Michèle would be a great choice and have been very excited. Unfortunately, no sooner was she nominated that a vicious campaign of innuendo and allegations about her sexual orientation emerged, coming in part from President Préval's opponents.

Many in Haiti and in the diaspora have been following this story closely while wondering what they can do. There has been an outpouring of support in Haiti that I don't have time to document here. (If you read French, go to Ms. Pierre-Louis' website which I link to below.) Here in the US, I've noticed a Facebook group, Soutenir Michèle Pierre-Louis, which contains a petition. There has also been a letter of support by board members of Dwa Fanm, an organization serving Haitian-American and immigrant women in Brooklyn, New York. JocelynMcCalla, former Exec Director of the National Coalition for Haitian Rights came up with this blog post which contains some useful history about female leadership in Haiti. Contacts in Haiti predicted that support from within and without the country has been so strong that Parliament would have no choice but to approve her. Yesterday the Chamber of Deputies did just that. The final word is now in the hands of the Senate which will vote on the nomination next week.

Sometime last week, Michèle Pierre-Louis' team came up with a website/blog that is meant to fight the smears, to borrow from Obamaspeak.

Some inevitable punditry

Nothing ridiculously coherent. Just some inevitable thoughts and questions:

It's interesting that in the last months, the governments of both Haiti and Jamaica have had to contend with the issue of homosexuality. The Jamaican prime minister's recent statement to the BBC that there is no place for gays in his government has generated lots of ink.

It's still not clear to me what this ratification represents for gay rights in Haiti. Ms. Pierre-Louis is not "out" that I know of nor is it clear whether allegations of her homosexuality are indeed true. The support for her seems to have come from the undeniability of her commitment and competence based on her track record with FOKAL over the years. My contacts in Haiti who support her feel like her private life is just that and should not be a factor here. If anything, this is a confirmation of the prized values of privacy and discretion in the national psyche rather than an explicit gay rights victory.

I'd love to hear from readers on this topic, especially from people who have lived this on the ground.

Technorati: michele pierre-louis - jocelyn mccalla - fokal

Enter your Email
<input title="Your Google Toolbar can fill this in for you. Just as others can proudly identify themselves by origin so should we,” said Persaud.

First and foremost will be the need to get legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress, then passed by Congress that will mandate that the new Census form add one word to the identity question on the short form - that word and option is West Indian or Caribbean American.

Sherra Pierre March, of CbeanMedia added, `This CaribID2010 movement is critical to determining the economic futures of our communities. Every year the census data directly affects how more than 300 billion dollars is allocated to communities across the U.S. `These dollars are associated to schooling, healthcare, small business growth, housing, elderly care and so much more. This data is the cornerstone to how we are ultimately viewed as a community – IT IS OUR VOICE. This single step to join the movement, will affect international policies that not only determine the flow of dollars in our communities in the US but also in the Caribbean and throughout the larger Diasporas we are ultimately connected to.

Here's an immediate step for those interested in supporting the initiative:

`So join the CaribID2010 movement, so our voices can be heard - this simple step of registering on www.caribid2010.com and filling out our sample census form will help drive the message to the US Senate that we are to be taken seriously. This is our time…this is the moment of change!`

In light of the fact that a similar attempt by self-identified biracial-americans to obtain their own box on the last census failed, partly due to opposition by civil rights leaders who did not want the "black/African-American" numbers diminished, it will be interesting to see what happens to this initiative. Hopefully, Caribbean-Americans who support it will learn from the mistakes of biracial census category activists and make this category a reality. We have a good two-three years to push this through.

If both the multiracial and the Caribbean-American categories come to life, pre-Obama era civil rights style black/white dichotomy race theorists in America may have their work cut out for them...

Technorati Tags: CaribID2010, US Census, caribbean census category

Battle of the Nobels: Walcott and Naipaul in a feud

Internationally acclaimed Caribbean authors Derek Walcott and VS Naipaul (both Nobel Prize winners) are engaged in an ugly, racially charged feud. That is unfortunately a headline out of this year's Calabash Literary Festival in Jamaica, partly because Walcott chose it as a stage to premiere a seemingly vitriolic poem written in response to an earlier Naipaul attack.

The Caribbean Free Radio podcast has a blow by blow account as well as other highlights of the gathering, including an interview with Thomas Glave, author of a forthcoming anthology of Caribbean LBGT authors. The Jamaican Prime Minister's recent comment to the BBC that gays have no place in his administration is widely discussed.
Technorati Tags: derekwalcott, vsnaipaul, caribbeanfreeradio, thomasglave

Nicholas Laughlin on Caribbean Literature

David Sasaki has a lovely interview with Trinidadian author Nicholas Laughlin. Haiti Soleil seeks to cultivate the intellectual growth of Haiti’s children so they will become self-sufficient, and responsible advocates for a just society.

Technorati Tags: haitisoleil, california

Kevin Powell wants your help in crafting his Caribbean policy

Kevin Powell happened to announce his run for Congressman of C.D. 10 where I live two blocks from my house at the FiveSpot last Sunday and I wanted to let you know that he is looking for your input on what his policy towards the Caribbean should be. Peppered with Spanish and Haitian Creole, his speech showed a desire to serve all interests and groups in the district and he specifically mentioned looking for perspectives on Haiti. So if you live in or around Congressional District 10 and have strong ideas about what his Caribbean policy should be, make sure to send him an email, call or go see him.

Just so you know, he is running for the Congressional seat that Ed Towns has now held for about 26 years! It'll be interesting to see if he is indeed able to unseat him but he hopes to try by energizing more voters than just the 2% who traditionally vote in congressional elections in the district. In the primary in New York, he endorsed Barack Obama while Ed Towns endorsed Hillary Clinton.
Technorati Tags: kevinpowell, congressionaldistrict10, edolphustowns, edtowns, fivespot, election, democraticprimary

Measuring Development as if People Mattered More than Places

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_V1xsC4Lpgmk/SBXMvmGQTpI/AAAAAAAAANY/c0ympr--qkI/s200/DeNovo%2BDanceAfrica%2BHaitanDay+Parade+082.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5194282863294434962" />

This article in Slate highlights the work of Michael Clemens and Lance Pritchett who see migration as a means of development.

The article summarizes a crucial point of the study in the following words:

Many poor people became richer by leaving their country of birth. Clemens and Pritchett estimate that "two of every five living Mexicans who have escaped poverty did so by leaving Mexico; for Haitians it is four out of five."

The study invites us to break from traditional measures of national income:

Clemens and Pritchett estimate that the income of the Samoan-born is nearly twice the income of the Samoan resident, and the Guyanese-born are more than twice as well-off as residents of Guyana.

The study by Clemens and Pritchett is entitled "Income per Natural: Measuring Development as if People Mattered More than Places." The study shows that poverty estimates are different for national residents and naturals and reveals that "26 percent of Haitian naturals who are not poor by the two-dollar-a-day standard live in the United States".

The study concludes that:

The bottom line: migration is one of the most important sources of poverty reduction for a large portion of the developing world. If economic development is defined as rising human well being, then a residence-neutral measure of well-being emphasizes that crossing international borders is not an alternative to economic development, it is economic development.

This is all very interesting and I wonder how it will all tie in to the ongoing debate about how or whether to channel remittances toward development.

Technorati Tags: incomepernatural, michaelclemens, lantpritchett, mexico

Check out two new features on the site

I'm experimenting with two new features on the kiskeácity site that I'd like you to know about.

The first is the "Recently read/seen/heard" section in the right hand column. In terms of insecurity, even if a lot remains to be done, one need not exaggerate to say that the government has produced numerous efforts toward bringing calm to areas of risk-those completely controlled by armed gangs, most notably Cité Soleil, Bel'Air, Grand-Ravine, Martissant, Gonaives, etc. Several gang leaders have been arrested. Numerous kidnappers have been judged and convicted over the course of the 2006 and 2007 criminal trials. This has fostered a climate of calm, and activities that were previously paralyzed have been able to restart. However, no effort has been made to improve the population's socioeconomic conditions, particularly regarding food. In the space of two years, the Haitian population has witnessed a phenomenal rise in the price of basic necessities making the right to food, one aspect of the right to life, a violated right. An eruption of the situation was to be expected.

Technorati Tags: rnddh

Put to sleep by Angela Davis. Yes. Sort of. And this happened at a panel entitled Urban Artists and the Politics of Visibility that took place at Pratt Institute in Fort Greene, Brooklyn yesterday. The first is Hank Willis Thomas whose work uses the aesthetics and certain themes of advertising to make very non-commercial points. He is interested in how advertising manipulates perceptions of reality.

Mural by Groundswell.

And then there was Amy Sananman, founder and Executive Director of the Groundswell Community Mural Project. Sananman conceived of the project in 1996 with the mission to bring together professional artists, grassroots organizations and communities to create high quality murals in under-represented neighborhoods.

Dread Scott is known for his controversial use of the American flag in art he hopes "propels history forward". First at Bushwick School for Social Justice's Social Justice Day, I showed students this film about the impact of Barack's message on fellow high school students in the Bronx. Then last wednesday, I was at the Jewish Community Center on the Upper East Side debating Stephanie Hauser, the Secretary of Young Democrats of America, who was representing Hillary. In both cases, students were eager to find out whether I'd actually met Barack. I was generally pleased to find that the dress code was very casual, which only surprised me because the event took place in DC.

As un-conferences go, there were elements here that reminded me of Open Translation 2007 (organized by the creators of the genre, Aspiration tech). Like the agenda setting process. Both (un-)conferences featured spontaneous, on the spot agenda setting which considerably toned down the potential for top down stuffiness.

But Rootscamp's agenda setting and Rootscamp generally were much less collaborative and collective than Open Translation 2007. Open Translation 2007 did a much better job ice breaking and discouraging the banding together of people who already knew each other. OTT used inane quantities of alcohol to accomplish that goal and though Rootscamp offered mimosas at breakfast on day one, its evening party was ridiculously tame ... One of the pluses of the OTT approach is of course the bonding but it's also more emotionally taxing.

Tracy Russo, formerly of the Edwards campaign offered an online organizing session that turned out to be a hit and had to be repeated the next day. Among other interesting points, she expressed skepticism with the notion of blogging under one's own name on behalf of a campaign or organization. Specifically, campaign or organization blogging have to by definition be vetted and thus unspontaneous.

I learned tons throughout the conference but one session held by two women from Mobileactive.org on cell phone organizing and fundraising stood out. The ladies of mobileactive.org (Katrin Verclas and Catherine Geanuracos, pictured above) talked about the high response rate on text organizing whether it be for GOTV or for fundraising. An astonishing 46% response rate was discussed which is much higher than the email response rate.

Chelsea (who gave me a ride from New York) and I were struck by this pro-marriage ad that we encountered on our way out of the club. We pondered whether such an ad would pass muster in New York. Chelsea felt strongly that it wouldn't. I thought it might provided the couple looked more glamorous.

Chelsea and I turned down the prospects of an after party to the tame official conference party. Instead we set out for another party but ... never made it. It's a long story but our consolation was this wonderful meal at Ethiopian restaurant Dukem. Yup, Chelsea's car broke down! After trying to start the car several times, she finally lifted the hood thinking a (male) samaritan would come to our rescue.

Like clockwork, Matt, a passerby, did just that within minutes! After he helped us push the car into a legitimate parking spot, we all had dinner at Dukem. Turns out Matt is a DC-based criminal defense lawyer who went to school at Fordham in the Bronx and has a few theories about the Puffy-Tupac-Biggie debacle. He also has a company called Blue Collar Books. I think Barack can use his help in PA!

View the full slideshow.

Technorati: rootscamp - washington, dc - Tracy Russo - dukem - brooklyn for barack - OTT 07 - Tracy Russo - mobileactive.org - rootscampdc -

Enter your Email

Tabou Combo's Yves Joseph serves Yes We Can! cake to benefit Obama

Tabou Combo vocalist Yves Joseph and his wife Nadja, pictured below to the left, organized a fundraiser for Obama at their home in Teaneck, NJ. (I needed a cold drink.)

It was all very thrilling but most would agree that the Yes We Can cake was the highlight of the evening!

Host Yves Joseph introduced me to the cake's architect, pictured below:

Over 100 people attended.

Senator Weinberg who had attended a similar grassroots fundraiser the day before talked about the very first press conference she and Assemblyman Gordon held in support of Obama early in 2007 when few believed he had a chance. Less than 10 people showed up, she recalled.

A student from New York traveled all the way to NJ to give a speech on Obama and a local real estate agent showed up to hand out free Obama T-Shirts. Most of the guests had been personally invited by the Josephs but some, like the couple from nearby Englewood pictured below, found out about it from www.barackobama.com.

One of the guests claimed that Haitians in New York voted mostly for Barack's opponent because they were not sure back then (Feb 5th!) whether he could win. I have yet to get my hand on the stats but since I had made appearances to speak about Obama on Radio Tropikal while volunteering with Brooklyn for Barack, I was a bit disappointed. This is to be further investigated.

Here is the slideshow. This view may be better if you want annotations of each picture.

Oh and for those unfamiliar with Tabou's music, here's a bit of Tabou goodness performed on one of the band's numerous France tours. Let's see if you can spot the host Yves Joseph aka Fanfan Tibot or Herman Nau, who was also at the Obama event, in here:

Technorati: obama - new jersey - teaneck - tabou combo - herman nau - yves joseph

Enter your Email

Picture this!

Interesting things have been happening to my flickr pictures lately.

This picture of Barack Obama that I took at a fundraiser in June of '07 was picked up by Global Voices (no surprise there) and featured in a story on Caribbean bloggers's thoughts on the candidate.
